Program Notes
Indigo is a reference to my study visits with TV Gopalkrishnan in India. Indigo is composed within the Carnatic South Indian musical tradition. Highly complex rhythmic phrases are layered over a consistent meter, in this case an 8/4 time signature called "Adi Tala," one of the most common time signatures in South India. These phrases are arranged according to a specific pattern and built upon the unique South Indian rhythmic concept. The essence of this concept lies in the so-called calculations, rhythmic structures in which recurring phrases are linked together through addition and subtraction. Other phrases are inserted between these. This entire construction (calculation) is typically played three times and concludes after a set number of bars. The introduction consists of a simple pattern of primarily 5/4 and 3/4 phrases, into which more and more elements of the later calculations are gradually introduced. The tonal material is derived from Balinese modes, partly original, partly extracted. Indigo is a puzzle with listening habits: seemingly the same thing always appears in a different context.[1]
