Program Notes
People were searching for gold, but they found the origin of humanity.
This happened in Sterkfontein, an archaeological site in South Africa where "Mrs. Ples" and "Little Foot" were discovered. They are among the oldest finds in human history. The entire area was dubbed "The Cradle of Humankind." Some time ago, a few gold prospectors discovered a cave there but found no gold. Since everything was so cramped, they resorted to dynamite, and boom, things got bigger. They quite likely blew up some hominid remains along with it. But Mrs. Ples escaped the explosion; she was unearthed by Dr. Broom in 1947. An exceptionally well-preserved skull of an Australopithecus africanus of the genus Plesianthropus, a near-human, which achieved worldwide fame under the nickname "Mrs. Ples." A sensational find!
These are the scientific facts. Much more interesting is the emotional dimension: being there, in the wild bushland of South Africa, experiencing "The Cradle of Humankind." A sense of the primal. Emotionally, this is a powerful experience, a transgression, from Australopithecus africanus to Homo digitalis; the past becomes the future.[1]
