Program Notes

When ragtime emerged at the end of the 19th century, its lighthearted, carefree atmosphere captivated not only an enthusiastic audience in America, but also, after crossing the Atlantic, found its way into the dance halls of Europe. Fascinated by its syncopated rhythms, even composers like Stravinsky and Debussy embraced this genre.

The undisputed xylophone virtuoso George Hamilton Green achieved worldwide fame in the Roaring Twenties with his novelty ragtimes and wrote in his "Rules for Practice" that daily practice is essential to achieving the necessary ease and lightheartedness. Out of interest and for professional reasons, I did this for a while: Ragtime music every day has something uplifting about it, or as a colleague of mine, Michele Angelo Duro from Tignale, quipped: A ragtime in the morning chases away your worries.

Fix-Gyx is a ragtime, harmonically and rhythmically somewhat expanded, but still with the nonchalance inherent in ragtime.[1]
