Program Notes

Angels exist in various religions and mythologies. My primary interest, however, lies with the Hindu/Buddhist Apsaras, beautiful, supernatural female beings who dance, entertain, and seduce gods and humans alike. They exist between heaven and earth, neither divine nor human in nature, with unfulfilled desires in both directions. The tonal material is a fragment of the raga "Chaturangam," consisting of four notes. Its relationship to the raga's tonic represents the earthly world, while the melodic fragments illustrate the longing for the cosmic spheres of happiness and its fulfillment. Or, to put it another way: kitsch as an allegory of beauty and dreams![1]
