Program Notes
The three interludes are based on themes from "Indigo," my composition for nine percussionists and piano. Indigo is composed in the Carnatic musical tradition, a highly complex compositional technique of South India. This concept, very briefly put, has a fixed framework within which the greatest possible freedom exists—an improvisational anachronism, so to speak. While working on Indigo, I was constantly faced with the choice between different ways of developing a theme, be it rhythmic or melodic, in the Carnatic style. The interludes are three ways of presenting various themes from Indigo in a different context.[1]
