Program Notes

Percussion Concerto No.2 Light was a finalist composition at the Hindemith Prize 2010. The solo part features a wide pallet of Percussion instruments, and alongside virtuosity and theatricality it also spotlights the profound lyrical potential of the Vibraphone in the song-like middle movement. The three movements are dovetailed in a single uninterrupted flow, progressing from the catastrophic, apocalyptic Armageddon, through soulful and intensely lyrical Lacrimae, towards the immersive, almost blindingly eruptive Light eternal, featuring a celestial trio between the solo percussionist on stage and two orchestral percussionists echoing it at the back of the hall. The concerto exists in two versions - the original Symphonic version, and the later Chamber version from 2013.
