Description

Percussion Concerto No.1 was commissioned by the Varna Summer International Music Festival and premiered within its framework in 2002 by the composer, featured as soloist (Marimba and Vibraphone), and the Brevis Chamber Orchestra conducted by Plamen Markov. The work is composed in three movements, the first two of them bridged by a cadenza for the solo Marimba. The structure is largely traditional, with the first movement in Sonata Form, the lyrical second movement in a Ternary form with Fugue middle section, and the playful Finale is an unusual Double Fugue featuring the main theme of the first movement as its second subject. The Concerto is a youthful piece exhibiting the influences of Bach, Wagner, Rachmaninov, Shostakovich, Bartok, Stravinsky and Pancho Vladigerov upon the teenage composer.
