Review

This duet for trumpet and vibe is written in 4/4 with a quarter = 120 With the exception of a few G's and an A, the trumpet part stays within the staff. The vibe part uses 3- and 4-note chords at times, but is mostly 2 mallet. Both instruments have solo and accompaniment passages, and the middle section (32 measures) is a strict unison double. Rhythmic patterns are not overly difficulty and seem to fit into standard patterns. Some sixteenth note passages might need a second look by the trumpet player especially. The score is easy to read and is well-supplied with performance directions (mallet damping, pedaling, articulations, dynamics, accents, etc.). No provisions are made for page turns (two are in the middle of repeated sections!). Recommended as a lighter addition to either a trumpet or percussion recital program, or at the least an introduction to ensemble playing in a jazz idiom. - John Baldwin, June 1992
