Description
“I have always loved Erik Satie!
His direct and sensitive music…
His exquisite taste in titles,
His sense of irony,
His art of provocation,
His collection of umbrellas!
By paraphrasing one of his titles, I wanted to pay tribute to him; and even though the xylophone wasn’t his instrument of choice, I like to imagine that the pieces in this collection might have made him smile… just a little. The word ‘Xylopédie’ is a blend of ‘xylophone’ and ‘pédie’—a suffix related to education. The sound of this title echoes Erik Satie’s *Gymnopédies*—works that were either dances intended to boost Spartan morale or a portmanteau combining gymnastics and encyclopedia… The distinctive touch that xylophonists must develop to make their instrument sing can be an asset when approaching other percussion instruments. In this collection, I offer short pieces (lasting roughly 1 to 3 minutes) that wander through a slightly offbeat world, yet remain rooted in expression, sensitivity, and phrasing.”
