Program Notes

The "percussion set-ups largely determined the musical structure of the piece. It is important that the percussionist follow the set-up design as closely as possible and that movement between set-ups be considered an integral part of the piece." Similar to David's saxophone quartet, Stand Apart, the composer uses musical "mazes" for the performers, based on the visual structure of the given set-up. There are some sections where each person is completely independent of each other. The mazes include some complicated triplets and a great deal of indeterminacy for the performer.
