Description

This composition was commissioned by the National Youth Percussion Ensemble, on the occasion of the gala concert at the World Music Competition 2005 in Kerkrade. This short, spectacular opening reflects the development of the percussion in its own way. The piece moves from noise (bass drums) to elements of 'rudimental drumming', an elementary building block for American drumming technique, followed by Eastern influences on melodic percussion instruments (marimba, vibraphone, glockenspiel, tubular bells). Then the composition takes on more and more Western forms and ends in a grand ending where the percussion is fully displayed in all its colors.
