Review

Ron Fink's work TIMPANI TUNING ETUDES is a very welcome addition to the small body of material on this subject. It does not attempt to deal with ear training or technical problems, but simply presents a musically interesting series of etudes that are challenging to play. Most of the pieces are logical rhythmically and harmonically. Happily there are very few "mambos." I especially like "2 Drum Etude No. 4." There is an interesting rhythmic line going from the beginning to the end. The metronome marking quarter note equal to 84 in a 3/8 meter is obviously an error. The "3 Drum Etude No. 5" includes holds, an accelerando to a new tempo, sudden tempo changes and interesting meter changes. Gee-- just like real music written for us drummers. Other pieces include metric modulation, a wide range of dynamic contrasts, groupings of fives, sevens and nines. There is even a nice little quote from Beethoven's Symphony No. 3. There are some typographical and editing problems. Most are minor, like a bracket around a time signature; tying a note to a roll; a crescendo that does not lead to a new dynamic; some incorrect rhythmic notation. A more serious problem does exist that detracts from the worth of a generally excellent book. When a note is changed, for example D to Eb, the accidental is not written into the music. One of the difficulties that young players have is an inability to hear what they see on the printed page. The intervalic relationships look quite different without the correct accidentals. I hope that this minor problem will be corrected in future editions. - Morris Lang, October 1982[1]
