Overview

George Lawrence Stone's Stick Control is the original classic, often called the bible of drumming. In 1993, Modern Drummer magazine named it first in the top 25 drumming books of all-time. In the words of the author, this is the ideal book for improving "control, speed, flexibility, touch, rhythm, lightness, delicacy, power, endurance, preciseness of execution, and muscular coordination," with extra attention given to the development of the weak hand. This indispensable book for drummers of all types includes hundreds of basic to advanced rhythms and moves through categories of single-beat combinations, triplets, short roll combinations, flam beats, flam triplets and dotted notes, and short roll progressions.

Student Reviews

"This book has a well thought out and progressive set up to the way it teaches one how to develop better stick control. It also has a very well-versed instructions page at the beginning of it to explain how to work through the book. This is not a performance-based snare drum book; however, it is solely designed to work through a progressively more difficult set of exercises to progress the stick control of the students and in addition help them work on their time keeping abilities. The only con, it that it does not really possess any form of performance quality to it, its just an exorcise manual to work stick control. This was how the book was designed, and I feel as far as the book being useful for its intended purpose, it accomplishes it goal. This book is also very well known for one or to etudes, and this is because, for a majority of the two pages, it works on perfecting the different sticking that can be played, and runs them one after another, this I feel, after working on this book myself at one point, is to reinforce the ability to play different sticking in a very fast and controlled manner, which helps with consistency in dynamics, timbre, and quality of playing. This is the reason it received the Four-star rating."- Thomas Scott
