Description

Daniel Jones’ work was one of the first compositions written for solo timpani. It continues to be one of the best examples of a composer utilising the soundscape the timpani have to offer. Each movement is written in a repeating pattern of constantly changing time signatures. The first movement is in sonata form, and introduces two themes that reappear throughout the work. The opening four bars of the development section comprise one theme, and the first four bars of the development section, the other. The second movement, entitled Variazioni Scherzose (joking or playful variations) opens with a boisterous and energetic theme before being followed by five variations in contrasting forte and piano.
