Program Notes

Rhapsody for Solo Marimba was composed while I was studying in London and preparing for the 2009 Paris International Marimba Competition. During this time, I would often improvise as a way to liberate my mind from the structure and limitations of the written page. While improvising, I found myself returning to certain melodies and themes that I enjoyed playing, and eventually I decided to create a piece based on this thematic material. The title refers to both the musical form of the piece and my personal expression of freedom, through improvisation, during this period of my life. -JR

Rhapsody was premiered by the composer in the Spring of 2010, at the Royal Academy of Music in London, England.
