Overview

His third in the series Portraits in Rhythm, Anthony J. Cirone’s Portraits for Timpani is designed to increase the virtuosity and solo techniques for timpani playing. 50 studies, with phrasing and a beautiful full tone as the main concerns, address the particular problems faced as a timpanist, such as the rapid movement between drums, muffling for clarity, staccato and legato techniques, and rolls. The collective material in this book may perhaps cover the full range of the orchestral timpanist. Each etude works on multiple techniques and ideas at a time.

Program Notes

Review

Mr. Cirone has adapted his very fine snare drum etude book, Portraits in Rhythm, to the timpani by employing exactly the same rhythms, but spreading them over 2, 3, and 4 timpani. The result is a technically-oriented ("Chops-building") collection of studies. Readers who are familiar with Mr. Cirone's snare drum etude book will correctly conclude that this sequel is definitely advanced-level material. - Al Payson, Spring/Summer 1976[1]

Student Reviews

"The virtuosity of the timpani is revealed with the musicality of Cirone’s etudes. A wealth of knowledge that is most presented to the intermediate percussionist with a previous knowledge of the instrument, but even then an instructor is required." - Denver Ridgway
