Program Notes
Never the Twain Shall Meet takes its title from Rudyard Kipling’s “The Ballad of East and West”. The phrase is usually used to indicate distance or incompatibility between two people, objects, cultures, beliefs, etc. however the full stanza reveals a different picture than this commonly-held perception: “Oh, East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet/Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God’s great judgement seat/But there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth/When two strong me stand face to face, though they come from the ends of the earth!”
