Multiple Percussion: snare drum, field drum, bass drum
Program Notes
The composer states that the player need to hold snare drums stick with right hand and double headed stick (one end snare drum stick, other end felt timpani ball) with left hand. There are four sections in this piece. The first section starts with bass drum and field drum at a dynamic of ppp. Then the snare drum entry brings the first principal line. After swapping the role of principal line, the two voices become equally important till the end.
There are two trios after the first section. The first trio is divided into two parts. The player needs to use his/her fingernails in the first sections. The composer indicate that the player need to play glissando (slide across head) dotted crochet and larger notes; crochet and small notes are required to play as single stroke. After the first sections, the player needs to play with sticks and start gradually crescendo till the end of the first trio.
The second trio starts with the time signature and speed change. It changes to compound time instead of simple time and dotted crochet in trio two equals to crochet in trio one. The player starts the piece with two snare drum sticks. The field drum and the bass drum part act as the melody and the snare drum part acts as accompaniment. Before the end of the second trio, the player needs to play rim shot (tip on head and shank brought down on rim) with the right hand and flip the sticks to felt butt with the left hand.
The last section enters after two measure rest. The player need to change back to two snare drum sticks and the tempo is back to ordinary one. The field drum and the bass drum part act as the melody and the snare drum part act as accompaniment at the first few bars in compound time. After that, the two voices become equally important again in simple time till the end.
