Annotations

In ABA form, this piece uses standard marimba compositional techniques such as double stops between the hands, permutations, accompanimental ostinatos to be played under melodies, along with using four mallets to accommodate the jumps in octaves (Such as with mallets 3 and 4). A slow chorale section is also present that allows the marimbas richness to be brought out. The ending also is a return to the opening theme with some different variations on the themes played in the beginning. The theme is heard once more as the performer speeds up the tempo and drives to the end. This piece is published by Studio4Music. This piece can be heard by Rebecca Kite on her CD: Prism.

Online Review

Oddly enough, it is nowhere stated on the score that Monograph IV is for solo marimba, although that soon becomes evident because of the range and technique used. An excellent, intermediate-plus educational piece, Monograph IV is reminiscent, technically, of some of Mitchell Peters' marimba pieces. It requires a variety of independence and roll techniques and is preponderantly based on quartal and quintal harmonies. It is effective in performance and functions well in the advancement of a student's technique. The music is easy to read, and is well laid-out, although the (11 page) piece has no good spots for page turns. Requires a 4-1/3 octave marimba. - Karen Ervin, Winter 1978 [1]
