Program Notes

The Coriolis Force is a force of inertia and perspective resulting from a rotating motion (such as the rotation of the Earth on its axis) that affects objects and their relationship to the rotation. Weather patterns and ocean currents demonstrate the affection of the Coriolis Force in nature. The title of this composition "Sensing the Coriolis" comes from a poetic musing on this idea of experiencing, empirically, the grand motion of the Earth's rotation.

Marimba Quartet No. 2, Sensing the Coriolis, composed in December 2014 (revised in 2015 and published with revisions in 2017) is constructed almost entirely of palindromic augmentation and fragmentation. Much of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century process / pattern music composed for percussion ensemble features very short thematic subjects, often constructed of only a few note groupings that cycle repeatedly as short relationships that result from longer palindromic canons thus providing greater opportunity for more complex rhythmic as well as linear phrasing beyond the limits of short rhythmic motifs.[1]
