Program Notes
Written for an elementary ensemble of six players, Latin Fantasy is scored for bells, maracas, triangle, guiro, snare drum, and three timpani. Using a beguine rhythm and some imaginative ideas, such as the "clave beat" opening of the piece clapped by three players in unison, it is sure to appeal to the young student. Of additional interest is the part written for the triangle player, who is required to produce two sounds (open and muffled) on the instrument, and the writing for the snare drum, which utilizes a Latin timbale technique, with left hand simultaneously sinking the rim and head of the drum. The timpani, in addition to providing a bass line for the melodies played by the bells, make a melodic contribution with a tuneful, eight bar solo All ensemble members are indulged with interesting parts that include solo opportunities. There is an art to writing an ensemble for young students. It should offer opportunities for teaching fundamental techniques and musical values within the limitations imposed by the age of the players, and at the same tune provide an enjoyable experience for the participants It is easy to predict that this ensemble will satisfy on both accounts
