Program Notes

For Elliott Carter for Timpani solo was written in 2004 especially for the percussionist and leader of the European Music Project, Jürgen Grözinger, and through its title refers to Carter's exemplary composition "Eight Pieces for Four Timpani". I met Elliott Carter in New York in 2002. At that time Carter was 94 years young and still active as a composer! The "five pieces" were written in close collaboration with Jürgen Grözinger and progress beyond the performance techniques developed by Carter. Thus the structure includes among others, Conga technique, various methods of striking with hands and fingers from the Arabian drum tradition, differing overtone spectra using the kettledrum and gong, and simultaneous pedal variants.
