This work highlights the sounds of instruments that, through the ages, have related the spirit of humankind to the rhythms of life, the heartbeat of the earth, and the motion of history. The piece begins with a magical snare drum rhythm, which intensifies with added bass drum, cymbals, tam-tam and timpani. The music progresses to a climactic, foot-stomping celebration of the drum!
Performance Notes
Drum Celebration highlights the sounds of instruments that, through the ages, have related the spirit of humankind to the rhythms of life, the heartbeat of the earth, and the motion of history. In the words of the famous percussion historian James Blades, "Its use and development, if only because of its numerous forms and varying modes of manufacture - subtle or otherwise - is a story in itself. From its inception, the drum had numerous ritual functions. It was credited with magical powers and was held more sacred than any other instrument." Drum Celebration begins with a magical rhythm, played by the snare drums, that grows in intensity as the bass drum, cymbals, tam tam and timpani are added. The music progresses to a climactic, foot-stomping celebration of the drum!
