Description

This percussion piece is composed around ten drum rhythms from well-known and lesser-known classical works. The opening rhythm is reserved for the well-known Radetzky March by Johann Strauss. This is followed in succession by La Gazza Ladra [Rossini], Fra Diavolo [Auber], Toccata [Chavez], Ionisation [Varèse], Symphony No. 6 [Mahler], Bolero [Ravel], Scheherazade [Rimsky-Korsakov], Pique Dame [von Suppé ] and Polowetser dances [Borodin].

Some rhythms have been left completely original, others have been slightly edited to give the whole more color. The most famous drum rhythm comes from Maurice Ravel's Bolero. In the original work, this rhythm is repeated for 16 minutes in a continuous crescendo. Rhythmically not difficult, but it requires a lot of control to start this rhythm extremely softly and regularly. Fra Diavolo, including the snare drum solo intro, was long ago used as background music for Laurel and Hardy films, or the fat and the thin. Scheherazade is the enchanting music behind the fairy tale “1001 Nights” starring Alladin, among others. Two rhythms originate from works for professional percussion ensemble, namely: Toccata and Ionisation, the other rhythms come from works for Symphony Orchestra.

The snare drum part has a considerable degree of difficulty [1st to 2nd div. level]. In order not to write the work purely for the upper layer of the percussion groups, I have [ad lib.] a field drum part [3rd div. level] written there. This, like the other games, is very playable. The choice to have one or more soloists play the snare drum part and have the other drummers play the field drum part is certainly an option.
