Program Notes
dedication: to Remo Belli; premiere: 6 November 1961, Los Angeles (originally: Suite for WeatherKings)
Suite for Percussion is a five movement work featuring a quartet of multiple percussion soloists. The musicians must master each percussion instrument, in order to combine them into a complete musical phrase. Kraft’s knowledge of extended percussion techniques is displayed throughout this work. In the second movement, Andante, the player must strike the side of the glockenspiel bar with a brass mallet, producing harmonics. Often the players are called upon to play with their hands, fingers, and fingernails, generating a spectrum of tonal colors that can not be reproduced by any mallet or beater. The fifth movement called Cadenza, culminates in an exciting climax where the percussionists must play not only as soloists, but also as a section, to accompany each other in their communicative features.
