Description

There are numerous works entitled Theme with Variations. In this case we first hear three parts that form variations on the main theme that also forms the final part of the work. The first part is a stately opening in which the third musical phrase of the main theme is used as the opening motif. An almost medieval dance follows with a three-quarter variation on the theme. A jaunty and cheerful part in which the melody jumps almost indifferently from one instrument group to the other. The Jazzwaltz uses the motif that we already heard in the opening part. It briefly has the character of a negro spiritual, but soon the swinging three-quarter time of the Jazzwaltz begins. In a surprising harmonic twist, the main theme reappears. The heading of this main theme also forms the basis for the conclusion of this Jazzy part. The last part (Unison0), which is actually the theme, has many possible uses. Bass guitar, drums and keyboards open the part, after which a beautiful guitar solo sounds. A few stops with effective drum breaks form the prelude to the theme played by all mallet instruments (bells, vibraphone, marimba and xylophone), played by possibly all musicians of the ensemble. The theme is so easy that even beginning students can quickly master it and play along. Multiple musicians per instrument, distributed over the entire size of the instrument, is more the rule than a possibility. The prescribed wind instruments further dress up the work. The composition of the wind instruments may vary, depending on local possibilities. The more complete, the better. The combination of historically older and modern music styles makes the work a beautiful program part with a timeless character.
