Program Notes

Sakura Fantasy was written for piano and percussion ensemble by Japanese composer Tsuruta Mutsuo. The cherry blossom (sakura) has been an element of the Japanese spirit since long ago. The cherry blossoms of Hirosaki Castle Park express the passion and sensitivity of the Tsugaru people and represent an important source of cultural wealth for all Japanese. This energetic and bright piece was written in commemoration of the formation of FALSA, a Japanese percussion group. Scattered here and there, throughout the melody are bits and pieces of the Japanese folk song Sakura Sakura and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 - Finale.
