Program Notes

This virtuoso timpani concerto from the 18th century was long attributed to the composer Johann Wilhelm Hertel (1727 – 1789). Music researchers now seem to know more about it and name Johann Carl Christian Fischer (1752 – 1807) as the author of this effective work for 8 timpani and orchestra. The present version for piano and timpani opens up both new performance options and improved rehearsal possibilities when preparing for performances with orchestras. This edition contains both a cadenza by Arend Weitzel and (in the appendix) the original cadenza..[1]
