Richard Weiner, a longtime member of The Temple-Tifereth Israel and a former member of Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple, both in Beachwood, was a member of the orchestra’s percussion section for 48 years. He served as a percussionist from 1963 to 1968 and then became principal percussionist from 1968 to 2011, earning the Cleveland Orchestra Distinguished Service Award in 2011.

During his time with the Orchestra, he toured the globe and performed on more than 175 recordings, according to the orchestra. He was inducted into the Percussive Arts Society’s Hall of Fame in late 2018. In addition to his work with the Cleveland Orchestra, Weiner was co-head of the timpani and percussion department and co-head of the woodwinds, brass and percussion division at the Cleveland Institute of Music.
