Program Notes

for the 2017 ESU Music Day Percussion Section.

Trenches was written for the 2017 ESU Music Day Percussion Section. This is a day where as many as 40-50 musicians come together and perform chamber music with each other. This piece was designed for the high school and middle school students to perform for the closing concert. The piece is written to allow multiple players playing a variety of instruments on each of the mallet and percussion parts.

Trenches is energetic work that uses traditional orchestral percussion instruments but can also be substituted and doubled depending on the needs of the performing ensemble. The rhythmic structures are straight forward using quarter, eight and sixteenth note patterns and is readily readable by middle and high school players. The music tends to play against straight forward 4/4 feel to using hemiola and hocket to add musical interest and to force the performers to not only play by feel, but challenge them to accurately read the notation. The mallet parts tend to be on the percussive side and play a rhythmic role as well as the melodic drive at times.
