Program Notes

for the 2011 ESU Music Day Percussion Section.

Taiko Machine was written for the 2011 ESU Music Day Percussion Section. This is a day where as many as 40-50 musicians come together and perform chamber music with each other. This piece was designed for the high school and middle school students to perform for the closing concert. The piece is written to allow multiple players playing a variety of instruments on each of the mallet and percussion parts.

Taiko Machine is a high energy piece that has many unison and hocket style rhythms. The sound is reminiscent of the fast drumming section of Marimba Spiritual by Minoru Miki, where the players are asked to play a steady eighth note rhythm in a high percussion sound while drums are interspersed in various rhythmical ways underneath the driving steady pulse. The mallet parts are used more percussively throughout the piece and are easily learned by beginning percussionists.
