Program Notes

for the 2017 ESU Music Day Percussion Section. Praesepe M.44 was written for the 2013 ESU Music Day Percussion Ensemble. This is a day where as many as 40-50 musicians come together and perform chamber music with each other. This piece was designed for the middle school students to perform for the closing concert. The piece is written to allow multiple players playing a variety of instruments on each of the mallet and percussion parts.

Praesepe M.44 is a bright cluster of stars in the constellation Cancer. The piece uses open voiced stacked 5ths to represent space-like quality of the title. The piece consists of many basic rhythms and rhythmic groupings to help develop counting and independence even with quarter-note and eighth-note rhythms.
