The first musical experiences of Leo Ouderits date back to his youth when he played in the local band of Mol (Belgium). Soon he made it to band leader. Already as a seventeen year old he managed to become the permanent studio drummer of the famous Decca Studios in Brussels. He studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp where he started to teach percussion later on. As from 1985 he also taught percussion and chamber music at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven (Belgium). It was only at this time that he reluctantly needed to leave the Academy in Mol, where he, as well as many other professional percussionists, once took his first musical steps. Some of Leo’s artistic highlights include the direction of the opening concert (Talisker by Luc Brewaeys) when Antwerp became the Cultural Capital of Europe in 1993, an experience that he still finds very memorable. Leo was also the artistic director of The Mol Percussion Orchestra, an ensemble for which he composed several pieces.
Tom and Tim Ouderits followed in the footsteps of their father when they also started their musical training at the Academy in Mol at quite an early age. Their teacher was Chris Lembrechts, now their colleague, as they both became teachers at the Academy themselves. As children being raised in a musical nest they particularly enjoyed making and recording their very own compositions using acoustic instruments and synthesizers. Later on they studied percussion and chamber music at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven (Tim and Tom) and the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp (Tim). Together with Evert Van Eynde they formed Pulse Percussion Trio performing in Belgium as well as the Netherlands (Bozar in Brussels, Ghent Festival of Flanders, Grachtenfestival and the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Pukkelpop 2019,…). Pulse Percussion Trio was awarded several prizes including the first prize at the Tornea Internazionale de Musica in Verona (Italy) as well as the audience award at the International Concours for Chamber Music in Almere (the Netherlands).
Next to teaching percussion Leo, Tim and Tom participated in different sound recordings and film scorings, among which the scorings of Sur la Piste du Marsupilami (composer Bruno Coulais) and The Death of Stalin (composer Christopher Willis, shortlisted for the Oscar for Best Original Soundtrack in 2019) surely catch the eye. Leo, Tom and Tim also played percussion for Toontrack. Their sample library Orchestral Percussion SDX, part of Superior Drummer 3 is the industry-leading standard in today’s music scene.
