Overview

Pickering, John. Mel Bay’s Studio/Jazz Drum Cookbook. Pacific, Missouri: Mel Bay Publications, 1979.

This book is for the beginning drum set player. It breaks down the independence of the ride cymbal, snare drum, bass drum, and high-hat so that the player can develop these instruments on their own first. Although there is good explanations, a teacher should be present while a student is learning from this book to further explain what Pickering means. The exercises start out very simple and work their way towards more difficult patterns. The steps are slow, but very helpful.

Student Reviews

I think this workbook is very useful for a beginner. Although I recommend that a teacher is present with the student during this workbook, I think a percussionist who can read music and understands the basics of drum set could do this on their own. At the end of this book, the student won’t be able to just jump in a jazz ensemble because they won’t know how to do fills or improvisation, but the student will easily be able to play and follow along.
Rating: II (Good, but there may be better books to learn from)
