Review

Zivkovic's CTPAX: STRAH for solo percussion and tape is written in honor of composer Dmitri Shostakovich. The work can be performed with or without the tape which contains the voice of Shostakovich. Unfortunately the publisher did not forward a copy of the tape for review. The composition is written for a multiple percussion set up of cymbals, triangles, almglocken, temple block% wood blocks, bass drum with foot pedal, tomtoms snare drum, bongos, vibraphones and other small instruments. Zivkovic also calls for the performer to speak and yell during a section with tape. The legend and manuscript is dear but all of the performance notes are in German. The work opens with slow quiet statements on the cymbals and triangles. Written without meter, the music contains a steady pulse. Gradually the rhythms begin to obscure the pulse as the music turns to an improvisatory nature. Here the vibraphone issues short statements in a conversation style manner with interjections of the metal and wood instruments. Leading to alterations of rhythmic and senza misura sections, the composition finally ends with a fortissimo sixteenth notes passage and an abrupt final note. CTPAX: STRAH would probably be a more effective concert selection when performed with the tape. The serious nature of the work seems to demand the added Ingredient that the tape would supply. Well suited for a graduate recital, Zivkovic's CTPAX: STRAH would provide equal measures of intensity and intrigue to any performance. - Mark Ford, Spring 1990[2]
