Glockenspiel

Description

Glock. Variations was composed to explore the natural and altered sounds of a glockenspiel. The composition draws upon styles and techniques used in multi-percussion, marimba, and vibraphone, and it also utilizes styling cues that hearken to several illustrious composers, such as John Cage, Alejandro Viñao, Christopher Deane and David Lang, without ever specifically referencing any of their compositions. Glock. Variations source material is based around the following simple numeric sequence: 41352-53412, and is present throughout the entire piece in its macrostructure, microstructures, rhythm, and pitches. The aspiration for this composition is to create a solo for glockenspiel that will not only increase and give variety to the small amount of solo glockenspiel literature, but to create awareness of the glockenspiel’s diverse sonic possibilities. Glock. Variations was commissioned and premiered by Nathaniel Gworek.
