Program Notes
This approximately 10-minute percussion concerto was completed in 2025 at the request of percussionist Satoshi Seki and premiered at the JAPAN BAND CLINIC Presents Special Concert. It depicts the three elements of rhythm, melody, and harmony in three seamless movements. In the first movement, snare drum and tambourine create a sharp, dynamic movement, while in the second movement, the vibraphone sings, and the accompanying triangle adds a touch of light. In the final movement, a diverse group of drums blends with the band, shaking the entire stage. Motifs derived from inward paradiddles and ascending sextuplets add color to the interplay between the soloists and the orchestra. Please enjoy the dialogue between the passionate high school band and the percussion instruments, which move beyond the role of accompaniment and perform in a magnificently dynamic manner.
