Description
Dark Flight was composed for a percussion ensemble of 12 players. Its title refers to the entry of a meteoroid into Earth’s atmosphere where it becomes a very bright meteor or fireball. Sounds generated by very bright fireballs have been reported, including sonic booms, hissing static, sizzling and even popping sounds. Larger meteors can enter a period known as “dark flight” after deceleration where the meteorite fragments fall at terminal velocity and will essentially be invisible. On February 15, 2013 a meteor exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia that injured 1,500 people. All of the injuries were caused mainly from the broken glass of windows that were blown in from the shock wave.
