Program Notes
Music for Solo Percussion is a short work in three movements for solo percussion. The instruments involved are claves, wood block, temple blocks, small suspended cymbal, five tom toms, vibraphone, maraca, xylophone and small tom tom. The first movement is slow quarter = 40 and uses all wood sounds except for some tom tom and cymbal. Although slow in tempo, there are flourishes of notes which create some technical demands on the player. The second movement is a vibe solo and is also slow quarter = 48. Pedaling and dampening are clearly indicated and are an integral part of the movement. The third movement starts slowly quarter = 84, but builds into a tempo of quarter = 108. It uses all the instruments involved in the composition and is the most difficult of the three movements. There is a continuous motion of sixteenth notes throughout the movement which move from instrument to instrument. This is a well written work for solo percussion and would be appropriate on a college recital. The instruction page is clear and indicates the setup.
