Program Notes

Born in 1932 in Kanagawa Prefecture, Akira Yuyama was one of the new generation of Japanese composers who came to prominence in the 1950s, particularly for instrumental solo works, choral music, and music for children. This 1968 piece was an early example of marimba music in Japan, which has come to be one of the leading centers of composition for that instrument. It is written in a Western style. It is a set of variations in a rondo form (which is where an opening theme keeps returning a series of episodes on other themes). The piece gives equal attention to both instruments, calling for exceptionally skilled and flamboyant playing; it even uses the marimba player, at one point, to use six mallets at once.[1]
