10 windows by Clif Walker is a large scale work for mixed percussion ensemble. Divided into 10 sections, or “windows”, this piece is composed with much emphasis on the importance of sequence and order, which makes it an interesting piece to learn and explore. This piece explores two main thematic motifs. The first motif is major and is based on the Gb Lydian mode while the second motif is minor and composed from the F# natural minor scale. The interesting thing about these motifs is that that they are based around the enharmonically equal note but work with very different harmonic structures, giving them each a unique sound and tone. Each window in this piece is its own exploration and together creates a wonderful and interesting work that is great for a collegiate level ensemble.
