This piece uses two sets of timpani. They have long played an important role in orchestras. Unusually for a membranous instrument, they are capable of producing pitch, and modern instruments allow for easy tone changes with foot pedals. This piece maximizes the potential of modern timpani. Various extended playing techniques are featured. Two sets of instruments are used, alternating between notes, with a single main melody appearing multiple times, changing shape. The instructions for the use of mallets are kept to a minimum. Please explore this piece. It is extremely difficult to perform, but we hope it will result in an aggressive performance.
