The work is divided into three movements (or songs) each of which can serve as a standalone piece. Performers shift between melodic and accompanimental roles highlighting a breadth of instrumental timbres, playing styles, and songlike textures central to the work as a whole. Three Short Songs includes a diverse musical vocabulary that draws from rudimental and classical percussion repertoires, as well as popular and electronic genres.
