Three Short Songs is written for the percussion duo, Apex Percussion, and is scored for concert snare drum and malletSTATION—a MIDI keyboard played with yarn mallets or similar implements. The work is divided into three movements (or songs) each of which can serve as a standalone piece. Performers shift between melodic and accompanimental roles highlighting a breadth of instrumental timbres, playing styles, and songlike textures central to the work as a whole. Three Short Songs includes a diverse musical vocabulary that draws from rudimental and classical percussion repertoires, as well as popular and electronic genres. This is not only represented rhythmically and harmonically, but also by specific stickings and permutations.
