Program Notes
Musica Terrae was originally written for the Arasmas Percussion Group as a percussion quartet and expanded for the University of Georgia Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Timothy Adams Jr. The piece presents three different scenes and a growing clash between nature, represented by three different music box melodies, and humanity. The first 11 parts may be performed by one or more performers and the instruments may be substituted for approximations.
1. Silva – The woods near a small mountain town, the edge of a forest largely untouched by industry. Millions of insects create a symphony augmented by the wind rushing through dry autumn leaves. As the sun sets, mist settles over the treetops as you move deeper into the mountains. Nature in all its beauty…undisturbed.
2. Oceanus – The ocean, vast and alive with constant movement. The cloudless sky overhead looks to be on fire from the brightest starlight seen in a lifetime. The moon lights the earth with its cool silver gaze. One or two lonely ships roam the dark expanse with bells signaling greetings to fellow travelers. Humans cross the water, but have little power over it.
3. Urbs – The city, home of humanity. High and mighty rise the towers, skyscrapers, cranes, and other human creations. The streets fill with machinery, people and noise. Prosperity is inevitable, until conflict arises. Brother turns against brother and families are torn. Weapons of unimaginable power would wipe away all that man has created. Yet underneath the rubble, the broken earth survives the battle, coughing and cackling and overjoyed to outlive the violence, if only for a while.
