Add to the catalog of literature attributable to George Hamilton Green, that undisputed giant of the xylophone, this gem arranged by William Cahn for xylophone solo accompanied by a marimba quartet. The marimba parts have been scored so that all four players can be accommodated by only two instruments—-a 4-octave and 4 1/3-octave marimba. Although the xylophone part does feature a florid obligato part in one section, it is written largely in a lyrical vein with double-stops used freely. This solo part places less emphasis on sticking dexterity and the technical demands that are characteristic of the xylophone rags. However, it offers possibilities for expression and phrasing that will entertain any discerning college mallet player. - John Raush, December 1994<ref>http://www.pas.org/resources/research/ResearchCompos.aspx Accessed May 8, 2015</ref>

The resulting 40-minute piece is, in my opinion, the most accomplished of [[Gareth Farr]]’s large scale pieces, and the first I’ve heard for some time that does not sound hasty in its gestation. It is a most imposing work, full of contrast. The wild, Polynesian drumming is in evidence as always, but so, too, is a contemplative lyricism, always part of the [[Gareth Farr]] makeup, but here properly formed and resolved. The marriage of violin and marimba in the central section of the work is beautifully made. <ref> John Button, The Dominion Post, September 2000 </ref>

Hikoi (’journey’) was commissioned by Evelyn Glennie and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. After the premiere performances in New Zealand, the work was later heard in a concert as part of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

Review

The resulting 40-minute piece is, in my opinion, the most accomplished of Gareth Farr’s large scale pieces, and the first I’ve heard for some time that does not sound hasty in its gestation. It is a most imposing work, full of contrast. The wild, Polynesian drumming is in evidence as always, but so, too, is a contemplative lyricism, always part of the Gareth Farr makeup, but here properly formed and resolved. The marriage of violin and marimba in the central section of the work is beautifully made. [1]
