“I have always loved Erik Satie!<br/><br />
His direct and sensitive music…<br/><br />
His exquisite taste in titles,<br/><br />
His sense of irony,<br/><br />
His art of provocation,<br/><br />
His collection of umbrellas!<br/><br />

By paraphrasing one of his titles, I wanted to pay tribute to him; and even though the xylophone wasn’t his instrument of choice, I like to imagine that the pieces in this collection might have made him smile… just a little. The word ‘Xylopédie’ is a blend of ‘xylophone’ and ‘pédie’—a suffix related to education. The sound of this title echoes Erik Satie’s *Gymnopédies*—works that were either dances intended to boost Spartan morale or a portmanteau combining gymnastics and encyclopedia… The distinctive touch that xylophonists must develop to make their instrument sing can be an asset when approaching other percussion instruments. In this collection, I offer short pieces (lasting roughly 1 to 3 minutes) that wander through a slightly offbeat world, yet remain rooted in expression, sensitivity, and phrasing.”<br />
