Unlike Kostowa's version, however, the accompaniment in Becker's arrangement is scored for four marimbas. Kostowa scores for only two accompanying mallet instruments vibe and one marimba-making this arrangement a practical choice for groups without access to four marimbas. The marimba part is notated in bass clef and requires an instrument that extends down to Ab, one-half step below the lowest note of a 4 1/3rd-octave instrument. If played by one person, the marimba part demands four-mallet technique; three-note chords are found in the vibe part. A drumset accompaniment is also included. The arranger suggests that the vibe and marimba parts may each be shared by two players-each pair using only one instrument. This will have to be carefully worked out, however, to accommodate places where both players execute notes that are less than an octave apart.The xylophone solo in The Whistler is one of the easier solo parts in the repertoire of George Hamilton Green’s rags. this makes it an excellent choice for the moderately-advanced mallet player.
