Free from pain and old age, they enjoyed the fruits of the earth in plenty. The men of the Silver Age were not like the gods, and stayed child-like for a hundred years. They were contemptuous of the gods and punished for their irreverence. Next Zeus created the men of the Bronze Age out of ash spears. These men were mighty, tall, and ferocious-a violent race of warriors who worked in metal and produced a few rudiments of civilization. In the end, these men destroyed themselves with their warfare. The next period was the Heroic Age, a time of notable heroes and deeds. Heracles and Jason, Theseus, and the great men of the Trojan War existed then. As a tribute to them, Zeus established the Elysian Fields as a resting place for their spirits after death. Still not discouraged, Zeus created the men of the Iron Age, the present age of man. Hard work, trouble, pain, and weariness characterize this age. In the end, so the myth says, the gods will abandon this age, leaving man to fend for himself. This composition, for solo timpani, is a musical portrayal of the spirit of the Five Ages. Extensive use of non-traditional effects are employed to develop a unique sonic environment that distinguishes each movement.

Outside of marimba concertos, percussionists do not have a ton of literature for marimba with piano accompaniment. To remedy this issue, I thought it would be fun to revisit some of my most popular percussion ensemble works and create reductions of sorts, giving the primary themes to the marimba. Additionally, we have put so much energy into writing 4-mallet solos that we have neglected our 2-mallet playing. These bite-sized pieces span a myriad of styles, techniques, moods, and tempi, so they are appropriate for any number of performance situations – from lessons to studio classes to recitals.

 About The Piece 
The piece opens slowly (mm=44) and quietly, with sparse orchestration and the soloist on snare drum (Introspective). There is a gradual increase in tempo and energy leading to rhythmic dialog between the snare drum and a large mallet choir formed from nearly the entire ensemble (Resolute, determinded). This erupts into a fff tutti at a ponderously slow tempo over which the soloist performs virtuosic snare drum passage work in double time (With great commotion). This large body of sound eventually collapses, dissolving into a very quiet and softly shaped section for Timpani, low marimba, vibraphone and the Soloist on metal instruments (Spent, vulnerable).

A brief chordal section (Sober, solemn) leads to the second half of the piece, which is based on brisk, angular rhythmic themes and in which the Soloist utilizes the full multipercussion setup in dialog with the ensemble. Sections for full ensemble and Soloist (Bracing, with a sudden burst of energy and Playful) are followed by rhythmic passage work for the mallet choir alone (Anxious, demanding), and finally a short duet for Timpani and the Soloist on High-hat (Persistent, determined). The final section (Precise, confident) distills the harmonic and rhythmic elements of the piece by means of rhythmic dialog between the full ensemble and the Soloist on a large, low Tom Tom.

Regarding the Title 
While the question mark formally makes the title a question, "what clarity?" is actually a statement. It is a response, a reply to the assumption that answers are necessary.

When I first sat down to work on this piece, I was busy with questions about life; questions that ultimately had no answers yet were keeping me fixated. When I finally began putting notes on paper, the questions were still with me, as is evident in the opening of the piece marked "Introspective" in the score.

It was when I put these first notes on paper, however, that my ideas began to develop freely and relationships began to grow in the music. I wrote the rest of the piece without restraint, unencumbered by my earlier questioning. In searching for a title I thought of how the piece came about, of the questions to which I found no answers. These gradually increase in frequency while a steady groove ensues. The title of this work is reflected in the near mirror-image setups for this multiple percussion duet. With a large, shared bass drum in the middle, each player’s setup consists of a [[snare drum]], [[bongos]], [[cowbell]], [[splash cymbal]], [[woodblock]] or [[Jamblock]], and an [[opera gong]] on a trap table. Along with the musical sounds, there will be an interesting visual component for the audience as the musicians move around the identical setups.

As the composer states, this is “a very groove-oriented multi-percussion duet.” After an opening figure on the drums, the piece moves to a long section played on the rims. Accents are passed back and forth between the players, creating interesting composite rhythms. Accents on the drums and other instruments are gradually added. At times these rhythms become quite complex, moving through sections of odd meters, mixed meters, and metric modulation. A short improvisation section occurs near the end of the work, allowing one player to solo while the other plays a repetitive accompaniment pattern. After another softer section on the rims, the piece comes to a rousing conclusion.

This is a well-written piece that will appeal to anyone who has played in drum corps, as many of the figures suggest marching tenor drum patterns. But the piece is inventive and will be a real crowd pleaser. The music comes with a CD containing the parts to download along with recording.

From the words of the composer regarding the inspiration for the title, “The basis of this idea was to use overwhelming power, dominant battlefield maneuvers, and spectacular displays of force to paralyze an enemy and destroy their will to fight. This militaristic term is the inspiration for the piece.” When it’s time to engage your audience, elevate some heart rates, and unleash the fury that only full-sized percussion ensembles can, Shock and Awe will deliver.

This piece is laden with energy and speed from beginning to end. Filled with compositional devices that are common to the drum and bugle corps circuit (fast runs, metallic impact support, and musical pauses that give way to crescendo punctuations), this work will challenge performers with their listening skills and rhythmic clarity and alignment.

The real strengths of the piece lie in how [[Jamieson Carr]] manipulates the beat and overall momentum of the work, shifting the listener’s ears from steady driving downbeats to hemiola twists. One of the attractive features of the opening section is when music that sounds like it’s clearly written in 6/8 gradually shifts to 3/4 through the layering of simple rhythmic backbeats. In terms of performance mechanics, all mallet parts can be played with two mallets, notwithstanding two four-note chords in the vibraphones. Additionally, each part poses slight rhythmic challenges to an individual player, but it is in the combining of these parts where the ensemble will reap the collective benefits.

Carr’s use of closely spaced intervals during sixteenth-note runs and unison climaxes lends to tonal flexibility when arriving at musical impact points. The result is a finished product where multiple “tonal centers” are perceived but never reconciled, lending to the continuous momentum of the work. The only real drawback is that the piece lasts only three and a half minutes. IMPROMPTU (1994) for clarinet (or soprano saxophone) and marimba by Howard J. Buss is characterized by driving rhythms and ornate melodic lines. The opening motives in both parts undergo almost continuous development throughout the work, often giving the music a spontaneous, improvisatory feel. At times the music has a playful, almost frolicking quality. At other times mysterious and introspective passages contrast with aggressive, intense sections to create an atmosphere of moodiness. The lyrical melodies and interesting timbral contrasts between the instruments, combine with the tonal scheme of the music to make a sophisticated, yet audience-friendly, concert work. Two mallet technique is prominent in the marimba part during the more intricate solo passages and there is some use of three and four mallets in those sections where chordal writing occurs. KÍM means germ or embryo and the idea is roughly to start on something simple which then gradually grows and takes on a new form, like a plant. The work is a continuation of my exploitation of the possibilities of the snare drum as a solo instrument, using sounds and polyrhythms which I hadn´t in the earlier pieces (PRÍM and KONZERTSTÜCK). The piece has a metric pattern of 3/8, 7/8 & 11/8 which is repeated 32 times. With the aid of brush and a practise pad as well as the instrument itself, one of my aims was to establish rhythms in various timbres which would develop constantly new wievpoints by putting these into permutational combinations. Commissioned and premiered by the Danish master percussionist [[Gert Mortensen]], the piece was premiered in Fredericia, Denmark in January 2002.

Dream of The Cherry Blossoms is a composition by Keiko Abe based on an improvisation on the thems of the Japanese folksong "Sakura, sakura..." In this marimba solo, the world of fantasy is caught in an expanse of continuously falling cherry blossoms. In the entire piece, the tone E is centrally integrated, and it must always be played (except in the last two measures) in the same tempo. Based in the music roots of Japan, this piece is a variation based on the Japanese folksong “Sakura, sakura…”, the two major themes of this piece are this theme, and a centricity around the pitch E natural. An ostinato in the left hand often appears to accompany the melodic passages of the right hand. Often times presenting itself aggressively. Some extended techniques are called upon such as dead strokes, and playing accelerating passages in the right hand as the left hand keeps continuous 16th notes. This leads into a kind of mini-cadenza which accelerates back into the familiar ostinato. The piece closes in a reminiscent way to the the opening with the player playing similar passages to the beginning in the left hand while keeping a static E natural with the right hand. With Prím (Prime) I continued my attention to the possibilities of the snare srum as a solo instrument, having earlier written a Concert Piece (Konzertstück) for snare drum and orchestra. Prím is based on a rhythmic pattern which the first fifteen of the prime numbers (1,2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19,23,29,31,37,41,43) give, when one uses 32nd-part notes as a basic unit.

Evelyn Glennie has now played this piece in most parts of the world, but it was commissioned by the Danish percussionist Gert Mortensen, and written in 1984.

This seven-minute, four-movement snare drum solo should become a staple in the advanced solo repertoire. Many playing techniques are used: hands and fingers, rimshots and stick clicks, double-bounce and press rolls, backsticking, playing with maracas, etc. Movement I (quarter = 126 and 90) is mainly rudimental in nature, with some hand and finger techniques at the beginning. All rudiments and stickings are clearly marked. Movement II (mostly quarter = 126 and 138) is also rudimental in nature. Movement III (quarter = 116) is to be played with a snare drum stick in the left hand and a maraca in the right hand. The maraca is used to strike the head, and is also shaken and "turned." The left hand (with the stick) uses a variety of rimshots and rim clicks. The middle section uses coordinated independence between the shaken maraca and the left-hand stick work. Movement IV (quarter = 126/120/138) consists largely of open rolls with various accent and dynamic patterns. Everything about the printing and performance directions is very clear and precise. Page turns are eliminated with a fold-out page.
