Impressive, the weight alone tells you the book is packed with information. Peters explains that the text was to fulfill the the thesis requirements for a masters degree at the Eastman School of Music. Nearly 300 pages on the history of the most extensive list of percussion instruments, but first applies a geographical separation of instruments describing some likenesses between cultures and the functions of others. the history of each instrument is in depth and precise. The second section of this book is Gordon Peters proposal of a percussion ensemble to the faculty of Eastman, providing a step by step process of establishing a percussion department and the criteria of the glass. He follows the proposal with the results of the following semester, and in the appendex he envokes the reader to study more about percussion, such as reading through orchestra and band method books to inspect them for errors in the sections that cover percussion.
"This book is one of the best resources for information on percussion. A majority of instruments are covered as well as the origins, history, and even physical characteristics, but if the reader wanted to see how to properly tune the timpani before a performance they would find themselves searching hundreds of pages just to find wonderful facts, and no techniques. Still, this book is a reliable source for anything percussion" - Denver Ridgway

-----------
Gordon Benes Peters has made a name for himself as an orchestra player, conductor, teacher, administrator, author and composer.

Peters grew up in Cicero, Illinois, where he began his music studies at the age of six. He commenced his orchestral career in the fifth grade, later performing in the famous J. Sterling Morton High School Orchestra and Band programs under Louis M. Blaha. As a teenager Peters was timpanist of the Roosevelt College Orchestra and the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra. (In November 2000, Terry Applebaum, a former student of Peters, endowed the Gordon B. Peters Principal Timpani Chair in the CYSO.) Peters' primary percussion teachers included Harry J. Brabec (principle percussionist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1951 to 1956), Roy Knapp, Otto Kristufek, José Bethancourt, Clair Omar Musser, Saul Goodman, Morris Goldberg and William Street.

Peters spent three years in the special service U.S. Military Band at West Point. He went on to earn both bachelor's and master's degrees from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he founded the Marimba Masters. This unique ensemble of seven players appeared several times with both the Rochester and Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestras and played numerous professional engagements in New York State, including eleven radio/TV shows with Arthur Godfrey (1955) and Ed Sullivan (1958). Peters also studied conducting extensively with Pierre Monteux in Hancock, Maine, and received the Monteux Discipleship Award in 1962.

Prior to his appointment to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra , Gordon Peters played with the Rochester Philharmonic under Erich Leinsdorf and with Chicago's Grant Park Symphony (1954 to 1958).

Since returning to Chicago, Peters has appeared as soloist with the Orchestra, taught at Northwestern University (1963 to 1968), and accumulated an impressive list of podium accomplishments. In 1987 he completed a twenty-two-year tenure as conductor and administrator of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago (the training orchestra of the Chicago Symphony), a post to which he was appointed by CSO music director Jean Martinon. During this time the Civic Orchestra gave fifty-two Chicago premieres (twenty-nine by American composers) and the world premiere of Gustav Mahler's Tenth Symphony as realized by Chicagoan Clinton Carpenter. Among the works Peters introduced to Chicago audiences were Bartók's Four Pieces for Orchestra, Varése's Ameriques and works by composers as diverse as Carl Ruggles, Frank Proto, Antonio Salieri and Andrzej Panufnik.

From 1968 until 1973 Peters served as music director of the Elmhurst Symphony. He was also assistant conductor (and member of the board of directors) of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra for twenty years. In 1993 he conducted the Bangor Symphony Orchestra (Maine) in a memorial concert honoring conductor-composer Werner Torkanowsky.

In addition to The Swords of Moda-Ling, Peters has transcribed numerous symphonic and "popular" works for marimba ensemble with the intention of establishing a true chamber music library for percussionists utilizing only one player to a part and no conductor. He has authored many pedagogic outlines and articles in the fields of percussion and conducting. His 411 page master's degree dissertation, A Treatise on Percussion (1962) was revised in 1975 and published by the author as The Drummer: Man. He has recently made a second major revision/extension of this work and donated it to the Percussive Arts Society where it has been republished in disk form.

Peters served as the first national president of the Percussive Arts Society (1964 to 1967), and he was a member of the board of directors of the Conductors' Guild (1979 to 1990).

Antiques, graphics, books, gardening and his summer home in Hancock, Maine, are some of his personal interests. Gordon has two daughters, Rénee Kemper Press and Erica Kemper Peters, and six grandchildren: Julia, Benjamin, Wylie, Natelie, Caroline and Joshua.

Peters was engaged by th Chicago Symphony Orchestra as principal percussionist and associate principal timpanist by Dr. Fritz Reiner in 1959. He was awarded the Theodore Thomas Gold Medallion for Distinguished Service upon his retirement from the CSO in January, 2001.<ref>http://www.mostlymarimba.com/composers/composers-p-t/724.html?itemid=27</ref>
This thin method book is a concise and comprehensive collection of material that can fit into a single semester. Including two DVDs with extended demonstrations on world percussion and the proper way to practice rudiments. It is interesting that the authors also include the drumset as an instrument, they use the terms like “sense of time” and “clearer sense of form”.
=== Student Review ===
"This small book offers a small glimpse into percussion, but the contents provided are a valuable resource for hands on percussion teaching and playing. The Play and Teach Percussion book is a comprehensive guide to beginning to understand the world of percussion, and in a “less talk more action way”. This book would be appropriate to some young music classes or perhaps a group of beginning musicians in a studio." - Denver Ridgway
== Overview ==
Cirone, Anthony J., and Joe Sinai. ''The Logic of It All: Professional Secrets Applying Imagination to Percussion Techniques.'' Menlo Park, Cal.: Cirone Publications, 1977.<br>
This book discusses, in depth, the sounds and playing techniques of these instruments. For example, in the snare drum section it discusses the difference between calf heads, plastic heads, wire snares, gut snares, wood shells, and metal shells. It goes into what sounds each would produce and why one would want that sound. Also, there are many pictures to indicate playing spots and how to hold the instruments. It even has a step by step example of how to crash the cymbals. The end of the book discusses pieces such as: Capriccio Espagnol by Rimsky-Korsakow, Concerto for Orchestra by Bela Bartok, and Symphonie No. 4 by Tschaikowsky. First, it lists observations of the piece which could include how the instrument should be set up or how the dynamic is marked forte, but often is played softer. Then it lists interpretations, or playing techniques, as in where to play on the instrument and how the ties of drum rolls should be played.
I think this book is helpful because it discusses different playing techniques and what sound you are trying to get out of the instrument. I also like the excerpts at the end because it is very helpful advice for auditions. The weakness about this book is that it is fairly old, it doesn’t discuss all of the percussion instruments, and it doesn’t go into as much detail as other books. Also, there were techniques in there that I didn’t agree with. I think this book would be helpful, but I also think there are better method books out there. <br>
" This timeless treatise on the professional secrets of percussion performance, written by two of America's most outstanding orchestral percussionists, provides the kind of information that before this book could only have been gained by years of public performance. The book was written with the intensions of bridging the gap between students and professionals. After reading this book one is sure to find a tip or two that they will use in their career.
== Overview ==
The modern timpanist faces a new world of music that is more and more requiring an increasingly high level of technical proficiency. Appropriately titled, The Well-Tempered Timpanist is a wonderful collection of extensive writing of sticking permutations and drum combinations that the performing percussionist is bound to come across. Charles Dowd writes 770 studies for improving the reading and execution of crucial techniques like muting, staccato and legato playing, phrasing, and tuning. He intentionally left out hundreds of combinations, so even if someone finds their self working through all of the patterns they can always find another way to improve.
"This excellent book is great for timpani teachers and students wishing to perfect upon there professional playing of the timpani. This is not a standard method book, basic playing techniques are note provided, knowledge of the instrument and how it is played is required before the use of this book. This book is written with a profound love of the instrument, music and teaching, and would serve any percussionist well in mastering the fundamentals." - Denver Ridgway
Concepts for Timpani is an interesting organization of timpani technique etudes that provide a fresh approach to timpani playing. John Beck has acquired a wealth of information to train a percussionist to produce a quality sound to blend into the music while also keeping the performer relaxed. Ideas like relaxation, legato strokes, and warming up are all stressed and are essential to the performer.
"The information provided is done so in a clear and understandable manner. A beginning percussionist would have a difficult time on their own studying out of this book, but with the help of an instructor, this book is just as useful to an intermediate percussionist as any other they may find." - Denver Ridgway
Measures of Success is divided into six chapters. Each chapter is followed by a full-page assessment. Music history is presented simultaneously with art, literature, and world history, giving students a broad picture of social and artistic events of a certain time period. Composer pictures, artists, paintings, authors, literary works, world history, and fun facts are presented throughout the method. Best of all, it is contained in the text so directors do not need to do additional research.
"Seeing that this book is all about how to practice it is useful to someone at any level of playing. To adopt some ideas from this book early on would greatly improve anyone’s playing in the long run. For the more experienced percussionist it provides feedback to see if what they are doing in the practice rooms is leading them on the correct path while also providing new material in the case that there is something that is troubling the performer." - Denver Ridgway

Advanced snare drum studies may sound intimidating, but with in the first few pages the author is already giving advice to the performer. He provides guidelines for all of the etudes saying that if the rolls are tied to unrolled notes then they should be played without an accent or a break, or that grace notes should not interfere with the precision of the rhythm. Then he provides guidelines for each etude, tips that are specific to the music, and even shows the performer how to set up for these etudes.

== Reviews ==
"This is a great book to work on after the Portraits in Rhythm book. The difficulty level is somewhere between intermediate to advanced. A beginning percussionist would merely be confused at the first etude and overall frustrated with this book, but for someone looking to improve their snare proficiency, this would be an excellent purchase." - Denver Ridgway
== Reviews ==
== Overview ==

The new edition of The Complete Percussionist provides an updated view of the performance, maintenance and literature of percussion instruments in the school setting. It is written to help the band director to be in touch with information that will allow them to effectively communicate with today's percussionists. This new edition is spiral bound for ease of use while the user performs the exercises within this text.

This book begins with by describing percussion music as an ever-changing ameba with new instrumentation and notation added to the genre each day. With this in mind, Breithaupt defines and provides information that has been found crucial to the percussionist. Covering a wide range of instruments from the traditional janissary to a few off beat auxiliary and world percussion instruments, as well as an extensive section on drumset playing, keyboard percussion, and marching percussion. Each instrument is explained with informative illustrations and notated examples.

This book is extremely useful, and would be an excellent book for teaching an introductory level percussion method class, or for any band director.
His third in the series Portraits in Rhythm, Anthony J. Cirone’s Portraits for Timpani is designed to increase the virtuosity and solo techniques for timpani playing. 50 studies, with phrasing and a beautiful full tone as the main concerns, address the particular problems faced as a timpanist, such as the rapid movement between drums, muffling for clarity, staccato and legato techniques, and rolls. The collective material in this book may perhaps cover the full range of the orchestral timpanist. Each etude works on multiple techniques and ideas at a time.

=== Review ===
Mr. Cirone has adapted his very fine snare drum etude book, Portraits in Rhythm, to the timpani by employing exactly the same rhythms, but spreading them over 2, 3, and 4 timpani. The result is a technically-oriented ("Chops-building") collection of studies. Readers who are familiar with Mr. Cirone's snare drum etude book will correctly conclude that this sequel is definitely advanced-level material. - Al Payson, Spring/Summer 1976<ref>[http://www.pas.org PAS.ORG]</ref>

===Student Reviews===

"The virtuosity of the timpani is revealed with the musicality of Cirone’s etudes. A wealth of knowledge that is most presented to the intermediate percussionist with a previous knowledge of the instrument, but even then an instructor is required." - Denver Ridgway
== Program Notes ==

=== Review ===
