Program Notes

For information concerning the origin of my "Piece Percussionique" series, see Piece Percussionique No.1. This is the fourth of my works for percussion ensemble. It was originally written in 1967 as a competition entry sponsored by the New Percussion Quartet (founded by percussionist, Jan Williams) at State University of New York at Buffalo. The piece did not win the competition, but received an honourable mention. It remained unperformed and unedited until its revision in 1981. Coincidentally, the number "4" figures prominently in various aspects of the work: four players and groupings of four similar instruments. The piece is also in four sections (ABAB) consisting of alternating slow and fast sections preceded by a slower four bar introduction and a faster coda. This 1981 revision doubles the length of the original by adding a second A and B section. These newer sections are variants of the former and often consist of previous rhythmic material transposed to another player's part. Although still quite complex and difficult, this version has somewhat simplified the original.

premiere: 28 March 1982, Humber College, Etobicoke, Ontario by the Toronto Percussion Ensemble, J. Scott Irvine, conductor
